Description
Venkat Raman Singh Shyam, or Venkat Shyam as he s often called, is a contemporary artist who bridges the gap between traditional Gond art and modern themes. Born into a Pardhan Gond family in Madhya Pradesh, India, Venkat s artistic journey began young. Encouraged by his uncle, the legendary Jangarh Singh Shyam, Venkat honed his skills, learning the intricacies of the Jangarh Kalam style and the rich heritage of Gond storytelling through art.
Unlike many Gond artists who focus on natural materials and mud walls, Venkat is a multi-faceted artist. He readily embraces canvases, murals, etchings, and even animation to express his artistic vision. While his paintings retain the essence of Gond art – geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and intricate dot work – they also depict contemporary themes. This unique blend allows him to showcase Gond culture and stories to a wider audience.
Venkat s artistic talent has garnered him international recognition. He received Rajya Hasta Shilpa Puraskar from the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 2002. His paintings have found homes in prestigious collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the National Gallery in Ottawa. He has also collaborated on an animated film based on a Gond folktale, showcasing the versatility of his artistic expression.
Venkat Shyam s dedication to his heritage, coupled with his willingness to explore new forms, has positioned him as a leading voice in contemporary Gond art. Through his vibrant and captivating works, he ensures the rich traditions of the Gond people continue to captivate audiences worldwide.Â
